

When asked for some of my favorite restaurants in Chicago, I always share Calumet Fisheries. It’s on the far south side in an industrial stretch along the river. Anthony Bourdain loved this spot, so you know it’s GOATed. They make some of the best smoked fish I’ve ever had, I’m talking peel-and-eat smoked shrimp, smoked trout and salmon, served by the pound. Their fried smelts are also a revelation. It’s cash only and takeaway.
There are picnic benches out front but we prefer to take our food to Calumet Beach and eat with a coastal view.
Pro tip: bring some baby wipes to clean your hands off after, and make sure to share your spoils with your pup
